We were inspired by the idea of travelling while you dream. For one of us, her last dream put her in a rollercoaster that then sent her off a cliff. She remembers no other dreams after that. There's a little clay figure here sleeping and they're in the physical world, while the mural represents their dreamscape. At first, it seems perilous and confusing. Tiny hands stick out from the wall and act as lamp posts on a path made from a ribbon. A forest of mushrooms tower over the traveler. But with the little cat as a guide, over time, it becomes less frightening and more interesting. And soon the traveler gains a little degree of control over their own experiences. In their subsequent travels, the world of dreams becomes inviting and empowering. Dreams can be whatever you make of it, and it can give you the unlimited creativity that is less possible in real life. With this mural, we wanted to convey a sense of abstraction as our everyday logic is turned on its head. Dreams open us up to a world that can frighten or intrigue us, and it welcomes us every night when we sleep, even if not all of it is remembered in the morning.

Our Garden City [Bronze Award]
Artists:

Building in Nature - The theme, Our Garden City, is obviously referring to the original planning vision of Singapore to build a garden city. However, we chose to interpret this instead as a reimagined city in a garden.
A typical garden city is usually imagined as inserting plants around a built environment. Instead, we wanted the garden to be the focus, with the buildings being secondary. Following this train of thought, the orchids, being Singapore’s national flower, largely occupied the wall. The buildings were then allowed to inhibit the existing ‘structure’ of nature. This conveys the concept of building a city around nature, where we should foster a better connection with nature, instead of artificially inserting nature where convenient.
Architects by training, we purposefully made the buildings sharper, to contrast the organic shapes of the orchids. While they may be two very different forms, it also represents how something organic and structured can still work so well together.

Aspirations

Nur Rulhuda (@crooelly)
This mixed media mural is a representation of mixed emotional states that I went through as a creative, where I constantly seek opportunities to expand and develop my visual language.
I started this journey with mixed emotions; being lost and uninspired but at the same time wanting to feel the light. It took a lot of self convincing for me to trust the process.
Through exploration of new techniques, I realised that aesthetics stimulate the excitement in me to continue to grow, both creatively and in life. Thus, giving me hope to emotionally shine through the art works I've created and those that I will continue to create.

Balancing Act

The mural shows different acts of people in the mist of balancing different items and objects. A loud hailer announces the acts in a loud and whimsical manner. We painted floating shapes in the background to create movement in the piece.
Firstly, we have a figure hanging upside down trying to balance himself on the tightrope. Secondly , we also have a figure balancing some plants on his arms while walking on the tightrope, showing the struggles he has juggling his life and his hobby of taking care of plants. Then we have the main characters of the mural trying to find balance on a see saw while carrying the things that are important to them. The girl on the left carrying earth on her head is trying to find a balance with nature. While the boy carrying some books on his head is balancing his studies and his life. Last but not least the girl on the right is holding on to a balancing scale that has a brain and a heart on different sides of the scale, she is finding a balance in making decisions based on her head or her heart.
We hope that the mural showcases a light hearted imagery of balancing acts and it would bring a smile to the viewers of the mural. We wanted to create something bright and colourful to capture the eye of the viewers hence the myriad of colours used in this artwork.
The medium used in this piece is Nippon Paint Vinilex5000 and Posca pens.

Belief

Do you believe in yourself? Even when the stars have assumed who you are and how your life may turn out to be. Astrology is an interesting topic that a handful of people may not believe in; on a surface level, many people may assume your character just from your Sun sign. However, the possibilities of the galaxy are so wide with so many planets and stars that play in your natal chart. Everyone is unique and different, and they have their own journeys to experience. There is more to a person’s personality far from their Sun sign, which includes their signs in other planets that play other aspects of someone’s life and personality. Studying Astrology deeper has taught me to get to know myself a little more, self-discovery, self-learning, understanding my strengths and improving my weaknesses. Everyone has their own little universe. So take life one step at a time and believe in your own universe.
Left to right: Sagittarius Sun and Rising (Outward Persona), Venus Libra (Interpersonal Relationships), Mercury Scorpio (Communication & Thoughts) & Cancer Moon (Inner Persona & Emotions) 4/12 Planets. Sun, Air & Water Elements.

Finding Euphoria
Artist:
Muhammad Raihan Bin Zainal (@mdraihanzainal)
The mural depicts a scene or scenes I think many people can relate to. Even though it is open to the viewers’ interpretation, there are two ways that this mural can be read or seen from my perspective. Firstly, a scene of the daily life of an average man who works in the day and spends the night with his friends dancing and living in the moment. Secondly, a scene of a man stuck in his daily average work life reminiscing on the happy memories he had with his friends dancing and living in the moment. In both scenarios, the main similarity is the moment of intense excitement and happiness the man had.
As a street dancer, the idea of finding ‘euphoria’ makes me reflect upon moments I had, learning street dance and meeting new people who share similar interests. The states of mind and feelings I had just doing something I love and the fact that *SCAPE was the birthplace of where this interest started, which makes it more fitting for me to create this mural.

Dreamscape
Artist:
Mithra (@rnithra)
The Dreamscape is a constructed fantastical landscape. This space is filled with elements that are made up of ambiguous forms and shapes inspired from flora and fungi. This work draws influence from themes such as “Alice in Wonderland“ and “The Midnight Gospel”.
